Hello Patients and Friends!
Fourth of July is almost here. Enjoy the festivities and celebrate those working to keep our country great!
I wanted to take a moment to remind everyone about the hidden sugars and unnecessary ingredients in our food when we cookout and BBQ.I love grilled food and BBQ as much as the next guy so don’t think I’m saying not to enjoy your grill master’s food!
Looking at a BBQ sauce like Sweet Baby Ray’s there is 18 grams of sugar in 2 tablespoons of BBQ. I don’t know about you, but I usually do more sauce than that. Also, the sugar in most store-bought BBQ sauce is high fructose corn syrup. Also be on the lookout for other harmful ingredients in your sauces and seasonings such as:
- Canola oil – (Inflammatory)
- Vegetable oil – (Inflammatory)
- Artificial colors – (Neurotoxic, GI irritant, genotoxic)
- MSG – (Excitatory, leads to anxiety and many other symptoms)
- Preservatives – (Inflammatory and unnecessary)
I’d like to offer an alternative…
Make your own BBQ sauce! It is so easy, you can’t mess it up.You can adjust the ingredients to your preferred taste. You know exactly what ingredients are in your sauce.
Here’s the recipe I use from Diana Rattray. I found this recipe on The Spruce Eats website (I have no affiliation with the website or Diana).
- 2 cups ketchup1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/3 cup lightly packed brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons molasses (Replace with maple syrup for a maple BBQ)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (I use coconut aminos instead)
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 1/2 teaspoons liquid smoke (I personally don’t use this, the smoke flavor comes from the meat on the grill)
OptionalAdd Bourbon or Whiskey and simmer for 5-10 minutes longer.Add cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, or hot sauce to make it spicy!
Throw all of that in a sauce pan on medium heat until it’s simmerin’. Decrease the heat and simmer until it’s at the thickness you prefer! Seriously, it’s that easy to upgrade your BBQ sauce and everyone will be asking for your family’s secret recipe! 😉
Have a great 4th of July, be safe, and I’ll see you when I see you!
